Great news for international students planning to transfer between designated learning institutions (DLIs) in early 2025!
As of November 8, 2024, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) implemented a rule requiring students transferring between DLIs to apply for a new study permit extension.
Typically, students may begin studying at their new institution only after receiving approval.
To address timing concerns for Winter/Spring 2025 transfers, IRCC has introduced a temporary grace period.
Eligible students can now start their studies at their intended DLI while their new study permit application is in process, provided they meet the following conditions:
- They have been accepted to a DLI for the Winter/Spring 2025 term.
- They have applied for a new study permit.
- They hold a valid study permit (without a specific DLI name listed).
- They comply with all study permit conditions.
This measure is expected to ease the transition process and reduce delays for students during this critical period.
