St. John’s, N.L. – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency – July 24, 2015 –
Memorial University, through the Internationalization Office and the School of Graduate Studies, will participate in four strategic international student recruitment missions, thanks in part to an investment from the Government of Canada. Federal funding of close to $75,000 was announced today by the Honourable Rob Moore, Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), to support Memorial’s strategy to broadly enhance international recruitment and partnerships, and support economic development in the province.
The Federal funding will assist with Memorial’s internationalization and growth strategy, with a focus on international student recruitment related to sponsored graduate students. The project includes strategic missions to four countries (Vietnam, China, Saudi Arabia, and Scotland) where there is support from host governments to sponsor graduate studies overseas.
Memorial has historically looked to international markets for graduate student growth and this project aims to build on the success of previous international activities. From fall 2012 to 2014, international graduate student enrolment increased by 31 per cent to 1,038 students and this group now accounts for over 40 per cent of all graduate students at Memorial.
Quick Facts:
- The Government of Canada is providing $74,217 in funding toward the project through ACOA’s Business Development Program.
- Memorial University is investing $26,839 to support the project.
- Memorial University is one of the largest universities in Atlantic Canada and boasts an enrolment of more than 18,000 students, including more than 1,900 international students.
Quotes:
“Our Government is pleased to support Memorial University’s efforts to increase international student recruitment, develop key partnerships, and contribute to economic development. Through these strategic missions, Memorial will increase its international profile and capacity to engage in international initiatives, while also attracting talented students from around the world.”
– The Honourable Rob Moore, Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency)
“Memorial’s quality programs, innovative faculty and unique location appeal to international students and connects them to local enterprises and the community. We are growing our global reputation and this funding will allow us to strengthen existing partnerships. Strategically targeting countries with whom we have established connections will ensure that reputation continues to grow, thereby attracting increased numbers of graduate students to our campuses.”
– Dr. Richard Marceau, vice-president (research), Memorial University.
