Starting February 26, 2025, a new public policy allows apprentices in certain construction trades to study without a study permit if their training is part of their apprenticeship program.
This policy is in effect until February 26, 2027
Who Can Apply: To qualify, applicants must meet all of the following criteria:
- Hold a valid work permit.
- Work in an eligible construction occupation.
- Have a registered apprenticeship agreement with a provincial or territorial apprenticeship authority
Eligible Construction Occupations:
Management-Level – TEER 0:
- 70010 – Construction Managers
- 70011 – Home Building and Renovation Managers
Professional Occupations – TEER 1:
- 21300 – Civil Engineers
Skilled Trades and Technical Roles – TEER 2:
- 22300 – Civil Engineering Technologists and Technicians
- 22303 – Construction Estimators
- 72102 – Sheet Metal Workers
- 72106 – Welders and Related Machine Operators
- 72200 – Electricians (Except Industrial and Power System)
- 72201 – Industrial Electricians
- 72300 – Plumbers
- 72310 – Carpenters
- 72311 – Cabinetmakers
- 72320 – Bricklayers
- 72400 – Construction Millwrights and Industrial Mechanics
- 72401 – Heavy-Duty Equipment Mechanics
- 72402 – Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Mechanics
- 72422 – Electrical Mechanics
- 72501 – Water Well Drillers
Intermediate-Skilled Trades – TEER 3:
- 73100 – Concrete Finishers
- 73110 – Roofers and Shinglers
- 73112 – Painters and Decorators (Except Interior Decorators)
- 73113 – Floor Covering Installers
How to Prove Eligibility:
- Gather Required Documents:
- Proof of a valid work permit.
- Evidence of a job in an eligible construction occupation.
- Proof of a registered apprenticeship agreement.
- Submit a Web Form Request:
- Access the IRCC web form.
- Select “Update or ask about your application” and choose “Add a document to your application.”
- Provide the necessary details and upload the required documents
This policy aims to facilitate the training and development of skilled workers in the construction industry by removing the need for a study permit, thus streamlining the process for apprentices.
