St. John’s, NL – October 25, 2024 – Paul Shelley and Wanda Cuff Young, executive members of Work Global Canada Inc. a leading advocate for labour strategies and inclusive and progressive immigration policies, express deep concern over the Government of Canada’s recent decision to reduce immigration numbers by 21 percent over the next 3 years. This policy shift threatens to undermine the economic and labour market development and stability throughout Atlantic Canada.
Paul Shelley, President of Work Global Canada Inc. says, “this massive reduction could lead to a slowdown in local economic growth, further labor shortages, and a decline in the overall competitiveness of Atlantic Canada businesses already struggling to stay active. A single reduction figure for the entire country fails to consider significant regional variations and reasons for the need for newcomers.”
Social and Cultural Contributions
Immigrants enrich Canadian society by bringing diverse perspectives, skills, and cultural practices. They contribute to the vibrancy of our communities and help foster a multicultural environment that is one of Canada’s greatest strengths.
Wanda Cuff Young, Vice President, says “reducing immigration numbers diminish these contributions and could push existing members away and into larger metro centers elsewhere in Canada.”
Demographic Challenges
Atlantic Canada face significant demographic challenges, including an aging population and low birth rates. Immigration is essential to addressing these challenges by ensuring a steady influx of young, skilled workers who can support the economy and contribute to the sustainability of social programs. A reduction in immigration numbers could exacerbate these demographic issues and place additional strain on businesses.
Call to Action
Work Global Canada Inc. urges the Government of Canada to reconsider this decision and to recognize the vital role that immigration plays in the prosperity and diversity of Atlantic Canada. We call on policymakers to engage with stakeholders, including businesses, community organizations, and immigrant advocacy groups, to lower the reduction percentage and develop a more balanced and forward-thinking immigration policy.
